Every year, Kumagaya City presents an illumination display called the “Galleria of Light” as a part of its year-end festivities. This year, the location of the display was shifted from the City’s Central Park to Hoshikawa Dori Avenue. The annual show of lights aims to introduce a wide variety of different illumination methods, allowing visitors to feel a greater familiarity with illumination and to greet the New Year in a bright and enjoyable setting.
Based on the concept expressed in the name “Hoshikawa Dori” — “The Avenue of the River of Stars”— the design of this illumination spectacle focuses on the motif of stars (Photo 1). It creates a sensation of glimmering light reflecting off of the water’s surface, with an impressive sense of volume that increases the overall effect of this Avenue of Light (Photo 2). In the Shinsui Square, colored lamps light up white steppingstones, creating an illusory space filled with shadows and color (Photo 3).
