For a period of about one month starting at the beginning of December, Kumagaya Central Park has been presenting an illumination display entitled the “Galleria of Light” as a part of its annual year-end festivities. The goal of this display is to offer a new design each year and to introduce a wide variety of illumination methods, thus enabling visitors to feel a greater familiarity with illumination, and to greet the New Year in a bright and enjoyable setting.
The trees around the perimeter of the park have been decorated with lights that take advantage of the unique features of each tree. On the walls of the Ryokka Centre, where the outdoor events were held, lights were installed in the shape of a ribbon so that the entire building resembled a huge Christmas present (Photo 1). Side-emitting optical fibres were woven in a belt running from the fountain along the small canal, to create the image of a murmuring brook (Photo 2). Luminescent stones (man-made stones containing fluorescent materials) were scattered across the floor of the Pergola, and a 250W black light mercury lamp was shone down from directly above to reveal these stones as though in a treasure box of light (Photo 3).
