LES PORTES DE LA PAIX (Gates of Peace) consist of ten monuments, 9 m tall, constructed along the main street in the southern side of the Hiroshima Peace Park. It was a ;project by group of French architects and was donated to Hiroshima City in 2005, the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing. The exterior surfaces of the gates are composed of glass and stainless panels, on which the characters meaning “peace” in 49 world languages are carved. During the night, the characters are projected into the darkness by lighting installed inside the monuments. Visitors can pass through the Gates of Peace and walk around the surroundings freely. During the night, an extraordinary and fantastic space has been produced with beautifully illuminated floors, walls, and ceilings of the gates, so that the visitors can not help passing through the gates. They contribute to forming an impressive landscape around the Peace Park as illuminated monuments (Fig. 1 - Fig. 5).
