The Minatomirai Line is a subway, which opened on February 1, 2004 and which has a total distance of 4.1 km connecting the Yokohama Station (Yokohama City of Kanagawa Prefecture) and the Motomachi-Chukagai Station through the Minatomirai 21 District.
Each station was designed based upon the concept of “a 21st century station.”
The Shin-takashima Station was designed in anticipation of a bustling future town with a sea motif. It is the deepest of the five newly constructed stations, and it is composed of one floor at ground level and five floors below ground with a total floor space of 14,703 m2.
The platform floor (the fifth floor below ground) expresses a swift flow of water and the concourse floor (the second floor below ground) expresses a sweeping flow of water. Also, the road crossing level (the first floor below ground) expresses the water's surface when seen from underwater, while the ground-level building, with surrounding walls sheathed in glass, expresses the water's surface (Fig. 1).
