A Report on the 7th Lux Pacifica Conference in Bangkok

1. Introduction
Lux Pacifica is an association of Pacific and Indian Rim lighting societies that covers half the world’s population. The Lux Pacifica holds the quadrennial lighting conference of the lighting societies of North America (USA, Canada & Mexico), Australia and New Zealand, China, Japan, Thailand, South Africa, Russia, India, Taipei, Korea and Vietnam. This conference has got being well known as a good opportunity for international exchange where lighting designers, researchers, educators, engineers, etc make their presentation their ideas to international audience. The Lux Pacifica has the goals of assisting developing countries and emphasizing that good lighting design based on science and engineering is important, through performing the mission of the Lux Pacifica is to provide an opportunity above.

The first Lux Pacifica was held in 1989 in Shanghai, with successive conferences being in Bangkok in 1993, Nagoya in 1997, New Delhi in 2002 (rather than 2001) and Cairns in 2005. The 6th Lux Pacifica was held in Bangkok in 2009. (It was originally to be held in Khabarovsk in Russia on the same dates. However, the world financial crisis made it unable in January 2009.)
The 7th Lux Pacifica was held at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand on 6th-8th March 2013. It is organized and hosted by Illuminating Engineering Association of Thailand (TIEA). The theme of the conference was” Cultural Lighting”, giving plenty of scope to cover most topics in lighting art and science. Lighting designers, researchers, educators, engineers, etc participated in the conference to present papers on examples of good design, experimental results on science, engineering, etc in lighting field. Interesting social and accompanying person's program complemented the scientific and design sessions.
This report shows the outline of the conference.
2. Lux Pacifica Board Meeting
Lux Pacifica is governed by a board of directors with one representative from each of the member societies. The issues of common interest are discussed in the Meeting.
The Meeting was held in the afternoon on 6th March2013 at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel with attendance listed in Table 1. The Meeting resolved to hold a Mid-term Conference in 2015 as well as a quadrennial conference. It will be hosted by India. It was unanimously agreed that Vietnam had membership of Lux Pacifica after explaining the outline of Vietnam Lighting Association (VLA). A decision on the host and location of the 8th Lux Pacifica was not made. It will be discussed by the Board by email.

3. Contribution to the 7th Lux Pacifica Conference
3.1 Participants by Each Countries
Table 2 shows classification of attendees in conference provided by TIEA. There were many attendees from Thailand to support this conference. The numbers of participants registered by each country are shown in Fig. 1. There were 85 participants from fourteen countries (regions) including from non-Lux Pacifica countries.

3.2 Papers in the Proceedings
Fig. 2 shows the numbers of paper by each country, counted based in the Proceedings. There were 82 papers in total; among them, 30 were from Japan, which is outstanding. Of 30 papers, 28 were from university or college; 1 from architect; 1 from industry (manufacturer). It should be under consideration to publish the presentations, in Lux Pacifica Conference, on periodical and international publications such as academic journals, so that their results will be spread and be useful for practical application.

3.3 Oral Presentation
The numbers of oral presentation by each country are shown in Fig. 3 with the ones of poster presentation. There were 54 presentations from fifteen countries including from non-Lux Pacifica countries on the program in advance. There were 51 in the conference after 3 cancellations. Twenty minutes was given to every presenter, including question and answer. After new and important results in lighting science and art were presented in the session, a lot of audience participated in information exchange through discussion.

4. Conference Program
The Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel (Fig. 4), the big and famous hotel in central Bangkok adjacent to Benjasiri Park, were served as the venue for the conference. It is preferred for international meeting and convention events with world class facilities, located near the Sukhumvit Road frequented by tourists from foreign country. Table 3 outlines the three-day conference program.

In the afternoon of 6th March (Wednesday), the reception for participant registered was held at the entrance to ballroom (Queen’s Park 4) on the second floor of the Hotel. The roundtable discussion was held at the same time in the room, Queen’s Park 4 (Fig. 5). It had four panelists on the stage, who is a representative each from Australia, Japan, India, and Thailand. The topic was “Light and Culture” suitable for exchange of information in the lighting field of each country.
Welcome Reception began at 6 pm on the same day in the swimming pool yard on fourth floor. This was a buffet style party with nice music, where drinks and light meal delicious were served. It was a pleasant welcome party with a warm atmosphere arranged well by TIEA.

The opening ceremony was held in the morning on 7th March (Thursday) as shown in Fig.6. At first the welcome and congratulatory speech was made by the president of TIEA, Mr. Utis Chanchenchop (Fig.7) in the ballroom. The opening speech of the chair of Lux Pacifica, Prof. Warren Julian (Fig.8) followed it. Then, two key note speakers gave audience interesting lecture on lighting application and science.

After lunch, oral session began in the rooms, Queen’s Park 4 and Queen’s Park 5. The proceeding in Queen’s Park 4 is shown on Fig. 9. The chair of each session was assumed by some board members of Lux Pacifica, members of the TIEA, etc. The place for poster session was the room, Queen’s Park 6 (Fig.10), where ardent discussion were made in the time between oral sessions.
After the second day’s session finished evening 8th March (Friday), dinner cruise for farewell reception was served on Chaophraya River. We could enjoy watching nightscape of famous temple, bridge, with eating delicious Thai food, with listening pleasant music and dancing. We would like to express our thanks for kind arrangement of TIEA.
The situation of exhibition of lighting products, which was held by Thai manufactures at the place beside the rooms for oral session, is shown on Fig.11.

5. Past Lux Pacifica Conference
Twenty four years has passed since the 1st Lux Pacifica was held in Shanghai. The outline of past Lux Pacifica Conference is shown in Table 4 from the 1st to the 7th. Transition of number of participants and papers are shown in Fig.12.
